The
Illinois FAIR Plan Association is a not-for-profit property insurance association supported by
nearly 500 Illinois insurance companies. It was formed in 1968 to
provide basic and affordable property insurance to applicants in the
state of Illinois who are unable to purchase coverage through the
standard insurance market for reasons beyond their control. FAIR is an
acronym for Fair Access to Insurance Requirements. The FAIR Plan is
considered a market of last resort.
The
FAIR Plan currently offers Dwelling Property, Commercial Property and a wide
range of Homeowners coverage on a statewide basis. This is a substantial
expansion from the Basic Property Insurance originally offered in
designated urban areas, only. At one time, the Illinois FAIR Plan was
one of the largest insurers in the state. Today, the FAIR Plan writes
only a small percentage of the state's policies. However, it continues
to be a viable alternative for selected property owners.
The
FAIR Plan continues to fill a need for responsible property owners
throughout the State of Illinois who are unable to obtain property
insurance for reasons beyond their control such as external
environmental hazards by providing a full range of property insurance
products and services. The use of the FAIR Plan will continue to expand
and contract based on market conditions created by manmade and natural
disasters.
Historically, FAIR Plans in general, and the Illinois Plan specifically,
have a reputation for successfully fulfilling their mission by providing
a secure property insurance market for responsible property owners. At
the same time, the Illinois FAIR Plan has expanded its product offerings
to meet the demands of the marketplace. This includes developing and
eventually expanding the Homeowners program, providing earthquake
coverage, increasing coverage limits, etc. The Illinois FAIR Plan is
considered to be one of the top FAIR Plans in the country based the
products and services it offers, its excellent working relationship
with the Division of Insurance, and the support it has received from
the Industry including their effective participation on the Governing
Committee.
